Outcome of the General Assembly: A message from IPPF’s President, Panel ExCo and the Director General

We wanted to share with you the great news from an incredible few days at IPPF’s General Assembly, 29 November – 1 December 2019.

We are delighted that Member Associations reached unanimous consensus on the recommendations to reform IPPF’s governance structure and resource allocation system. On Sunday 1 December these were endorsed by IPPF’s Governing Council.

The collective energy and momentum from our Member Associations to drive the reforms forward has been tremendous. Over two days, we have heard the many eloquent and passionate voices from our Federation. There has been robust discussion and input, views shared and concerns raised. Together, General Assembly delegates forged a path forward, finding compromise and building consensus.

Read a summary of the outcomes of the General Assembly which have now been endorsed by the Governing Council. This outlines the recommendations for reforming IPPF’s governance structure and resource allocation system.

At the Governing Council meeting on 1 December, they agreed to the following priorities and responsibilities to be completed before the next and final Governing Council meeting in May 2020:

  • By Monday 2nd December they will appoint the members of a Transition Committee. This Committee will be comprised of a mix of individuals from within and outside of IPPF, and reflects the necessary skill sets and diversity we are deeply committed to.
  • This Committee will work with our Honorary Legal Council and management to draft amendments to our bye-laws and policies.
  • It will appoint a search firm who will identify candidates for the Nomination and Governance Committee; and the new Board of Trustees.
  • It will further progress the resource allocation recommendations and develop a detailed implementation plan.

At the final Governing Council meeting in May 2020, the GC will appoint the new Board of Trustees and members of the Nomination and Governance Committee. They will also review the bylaws, policies and regulations with a view to adoption. This will also abolish redundant policies, and they will set a date for the new Board of Trustees.

This is a truly historic moment for IPPF. It will pave the way for us to move forward and build a Federation that is more agile, transparent and most importantly, one that will better serve the women and girls we are here for.

Sincerely,

Rana Abu Ghazaleh, President

Alice Ackermann, Panel ExCo member

Olgah Daphynne Namukuza, Panel ExCo member

Tracy Robinson, Panel ExCo member

Dr Alvaro Bermejo, Director-General
